In the early part of the 1990s, only supercomputers were capable of competing with the best human chess masters. This is because regular consumer computers just did not have the ability to calculate moves far enough ahead, nor were they able to think critically for evaluating strategies as games progressed. This is during the time period when supercomputers were built with the sole purpose of competing against the best chess players in the world. With the rapid improvement of technology, however, came more sophisticated consumer computers, allowing many companies to write their own chess engines.
